History and background Foundation for Alcoholism Research

FAR was incorporated in Vermont in April 2008 and granted tax-exempt status from the IRS in July 2008. FAR was formed by people concerned about the limited help for those with the disease of alcoholism. The idea for the Foundation for Alcoholism Research grew out of an experience lived over a few years by one of the three founders. She was part of a loosely organized team across six states that was helping a young, well-educated wife and mother who had become addicted to alcohol. What struck this founder through those years was how little real help is available. The founders looked for an organization to join (such as a Heart Fund or Cancer Society but for alcoholism) and were astonished to...

History of Alcoholism

The history of alcoholism goes as far back as alcohol coming into existence to begin with. This goes back thousands of years. Alcohol abuse and addiction has been around for a long time, which is why in 1920 the United States ended up passing a law to prohibit almost anything alcohol related. In other words due to this law you couldn’t manufacture, sell, import, or export alcohol, excluding the use of alcohol for medicinal purposes.Like any illegal substance, alcohol was still being sold and consumed by many...

Alcoholism Through History - Time To Stop

Alcoholism Through HistoryAlcohol in its various forms has been used (and abused) throughout history for many thousands of years. Alcoholism has also existed as a recognised condition for much longer than most people realise - while the ancient Egyptians and Romans enjoyed both beer and wine, often to excess, Byzantine scholars were writing as early as the 11th century to caution about too much wine producing inflammation of the liver.During some periods of history alcohol has even been viewed as a benign and very healthy substance which ought to be consumed on a regular basis. Puritan preacher Cotton Mather once called it "God's good creature" and said it was an excellent choice of drink...

Historical Data, About AA, Alcoholics Anonymous (Great Britain) Ltd

Historical DataThe Birth of AA, its Growth and the Start of AA in Great BritainAA had its beginnings in 1935 at Akron, Ohio, as the outcome of a meeting between Bill W., a New York stockbroker, and Dr. Bob S., an Akron surgeon. Both had been hopeless alcoholics.Prior to that time, Bill and Dr. Bob had each been in contact with the Oxford Group, a mostly non-alcoholic fellowship that emphasized universal spiritual values in daily living. In that period, the Oxford Groups in America were headed by the noted Episcopal clergyman, Dr. Samuel Shoemaker. Under this spiritual influence, and with the help of an old-time friend, Ebby T., Bill had gotten sober and had then maintained his recovery by...
