April is Alcohol Awareness Month, and this year's focus is on the impact of alcohol across the generations. Alcoholism is a family disease. This is certainly true from a genetic perspective, as children of an alcoholic parent face three to four times the risk of becoming alcoholics themselves -- if they drink -- as do children without alcoholic parents. If both parents are alcoholics -- not an unusual situation -- their children's risk of becoming alcoholics if they drink rises as high as 80 percent.
