Defination of alcoholism

Another Round (or Five)

A female student who drinks four Appletinis during a night of club hopping is a binge drinker, according to most experts who study campus health behaviors. But so is a male student who ends up in a campus health center after an intense night of keg stands and beer pong. Researchers say that curbing negative consequences resulting from drinking -- an already difficult task -- has been complicated because much past research has often not differentiated the levels of college drinking behaviors. A new study, which will be published in the June issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, offers some startling differentiations, which indicate that almost 30 percent of all freshmen...

More Elderly Women Expected To Drink And Abuse Alcohol; What This Means For Their Health

Alcohol can affect elderly women differently than it did when they were younger. Photo Courtesy of Pixabay According to a new study, current trends suggest that the number of women aged 60 and older who drink and/or abuse alcohol is set to increase. While alcohol is dangerous for anyone, drinking can be especially bad for older women as they are more sensitive to alcohol’s effect than males their own age and younger women. A new report has found that while the number of older adults who drink alcohol is set to increase as the population ages, the number of older women who drink alcohol is rising faster than that of men. For example, the prevalence of current drinking among men over 60 is...

What Is "High-Functioning" Alcoholism Why Is It So Difficult To Recognize?

Most of us are familiar with the concept of the "high-functioning" (or just "functioning") alcoholic — a person who, contrary to popular stereotypes about addicts, manages to hold down a job, pay their rent, and otherwise maintain the appearance of a life untouched by addiction issues. Sarah Allan Benton, in Understanding The High-Functioning Alcoholic , explains that many of our contemporary understandings and definitions of alcoholism and addiction leave room for high-functioning alcoholics to "slip through the cracks," in part because of a...

Alcoholic Alcohol Explained

I don’t like the word ‘alcoholic’. I don’t think many people do. It has many negative connotations, but then there are many words that have negative connotations, like murder, torture rape, etc. Words are just labels we use to refer to things, there is a difference between disliking a word and disliking the object or phenomenon that the word is used to describe. However with ‘Alcoholic’ it is the actual word I dislike, for two reasons.Firstly, for me at least, it is not a good word to use because it still has connotations of a very outdated 1930’s view of addiction and alcohol. It is linked with the defunct idea that there is a genetic cause, that it is something that is incurable, and that...
