Study of Genetics, Environment and Alcoholism Leads to Pilot Prevention Program - Partnership for Drug-Free Kids - Where Families Find Answers

Genes explain about 60 percent of the risk for alcoholism, while the environment accounts for the rest, according to an expert who has developed a pilot program to prevent high-risk drinking in college freshman. Marc A. Schuckit, MD, Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, based the first evaluation of a prevention program on his 30 years of research in the field, with more than 400 families. Dr. Schuckit recently discussed how genes and the environment relate to the risk for alcoholism at the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse annual meeting. He explained the risk factors that impact alcoholism. “Genes operate through...

Predicting Alcoholism via a Simple Pet Scan

A possible biomarker that may identify potential alcoholics—before they ever become alcoholics—has been found in a new study. The biomarker: a surge of the native chemical dopamine in the brain, viewed via a PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan, when at-risk people drink. "This is fascinating," says Wake Forest University addiction neurobiologist David Friedman, who was not involved with the study. "It puts us into biological territory. It says that if you have a big dopamine response to alcohol, you are at greater risk of becoming an alcoholic than if you don't. This is something people have been looking for forever." “It is encouraging, and suggests we are headed in the right direction...

What triggers alcoholism? Creating a statistical model relating genetic and environmental factors to risk for alcoholism

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, excessive alcohol use accounts for 80,000 deaths each year in the United States, making alcoholism the third leading cause of preventable death behind obesity and smoking. In an effort to uncover the connection between genetic influences and environmental factors that may cause alcoholism, Assistant Professor of Statistics Tatiyana Apanasovich is employing statistical methodology to explore the complex interplay between the an individual's environment and their genetic predisposition to alcoholism. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded her a two-year, $146,000 grant to develop this methodology and a user-friendly...

Alcohol and Stress: At Risk for Dependency? - Our Thinking About Drinking

Research and population surveys have shown that persons under stress, particularly chronic stress, tend to exhibit more unhealthy behaviors than less-stressed persons. Stressed people drink more alcohol, smoke more, and eat less nutritious foods than non-stressed individuals. Many people report drinking alcohol in response to various types of stress, and the amount of drinking in response to stress is related to the severity of the life stressors and the individuals’ lack of social support networks. While some research studies show that alcohol in low doses may lessen the body’s response to stressors, paradoxically, many studies show just the opposite effect, i.e., that alcohol...

A Gene May Discourage Drinkers from Becoming Alcoholics

A Gene May Discourage Drinkers from Becoming Alcoholics Researchers have identified a gene that may protect some people from alcoholism, while making them lightweights at the bar. It was already known that people who become inebriated easily when they begin their drinking careers are less likely to become alcoholics in the long run. Now new genetic research has zeroed in on the gene indirectly responsible for the protective effect for 10 to 20 percent of the population. This gene, called CYP2E1, codes for an enzyme that breaks down ethanol – the intoxicating agent in alcoholic beverages – and many other toxins in the brain. Previous work had drawn a link between this gene and...

Is Alcoholism Hereditary? An Overview

Is Alcoholism Hereditary? An Overview There is strong evidence that alcoholism, or at least an increased risk of being an alcoholic, has a genetic component. Many studies in human populations, as well as animal research into the biological mechanisms that drive addiction, have made that much abundantly clear. Not yet clear is the extent to which alcoholism is inheritable, nor is the degree to which environmental factors and individual choices influence the development of dependence, addiction, and the potential for recovery.Below we provide an overview of the findings that support the view that alcoholism is hereditary, and highlight some of the remaining questions in this active area of...
