Manic Depression and Alcoholism: Prevalence, Risks, and Treatment

Depression and alcoholism  are often co-occurring disorders. Those who enter treatment facilities for alcoholism often score high on tests for depression, while those who enter treatment for depression often use alcohol to self-medicate. This co-occurring disorder is regularly treated with Naltrexone or Acamprosate, which help with substance cravings during withdrawal, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which treat depression. However, manic depression (commonly known as bipolar disorder) is a much different animal. When it co-occurs with alcoholism, the medicinal treatment for depression is not enough. Even so, treatment and management are possible.First, though, the two...

Depression and Alcoholism. What's the Connection??

Depression and AlcoholismDo Depression and Alcoholism go hand in hand? As a recovering alcoholic, I think so. Just my opinion. I am convinced that there is a connection between clinical depression and alcoholism. As I have stated before, I am not a psychologist, a medical doctor, nothing of the sort. But sometimes the best judge of a matter is the person who has lived through it.I have clinical depression, an inherited disease. I grew up in the 60's and 70's, and people just didn't acknowledge this sort of thing. When I look at my family tree, I wonder whether drinking became a convenient, yet unconscious way for certain members of my family to self-medicate.Depression can feel like this...

Do People Really Drink More When the Economy Tanks?,

Hulton Archive / Getty ImagesA new study suggests that in hard economic times, people drink more alcohol. Intuitively, it might make sense, but the findings run counter to most previous research, which shows that alcoholism and other drinking-related problems tend to decline along with the economy. For the new study, researchers at University of Miami looked at the connections between risky drinking and state unemployment rates in a sample of more than 43,000 people surveyed between 2001 and 2005. That was before the current economic crisis, but because the health of individual states...

Depression: Reject the Guilt, Embrace the Cure, Focus on the Family

There is a sticky question many Christians struggle with: Is depression a sin? This particular question is posed to me by more people than perhaps any other when trying to understand what is going on emotionally with themselves or with someone close to them. The situation isn't helped by well-meaning Christians who don't understand depression saying things like: "You just need to have more faith," or "There must be sin in your life, or you wouldn't feel like this," or even "If you'd pray harder (read the Bible more, have a deeper walk with the Lord), you wouldn't have this problem." To someone who already feels guilty about everything, this just piles on even more guilt. But are they right?...
