Exploring the differences between social drinking and heavy drinking, The Addiction Issue, Charleston City Paper

Whether it's a few beers at a gathering, wine at dinner, or cocktails at a club, most folks drink responsibly — regardless of what the PSAs proclaim. "It doesn't automatically mean that they are abusing or addicted to the substance. So long as they don't have recurrent problems as a result of their use, they would be considered social drinkers." There are some basic differences between alcohol use, alcohol abuse, and alcohol dependence. "For some people it provides a much needed escape from reality, which is also addicting in a different sense,"...

Childhood abuse, adult alcohol use disorders and suicidal behaviour, QJM: An International Journal of Medicine, Oxford Academic

Abstract Childhood abuse is linked to a variety of maladaptive outcomes that can extend far into adulthood. Two of the most significant are alcohol use disorders and suicidal ideation/behaviour. This article explores the pathway from childhood abuse to suicidal behaviour through the development of alcohol use disorders, and examines the significance of a familial history of alcohol misuse in exacerbating suicidal behaviour in adults who were abused as children. It discusses the implications of this pathway, and describes areas of focus for those who work with child abuse victims and/or patients experiencing alcohol use disorders. Practitioners working with children or adolescents who have...

India counts the cost of trying to solve its drinking problem, Global development, The Guardian

By the time the liquor store on Kalavasah Teni road in the south Indian city of Madurai opens for business at 10am on Monday, a small queue of regular customers has already begun to form outside. Within minutes, bottles fly off the shelves. By the end of the day, the shop will have sold about 600 bottles of alcohol and made about 100,000 rupees (£1,000). On bank holidays or during religious festivals, sales can be 10 times that amount. The Kalavasah Teni shop is one of 6,800 in Tamil Nadu, and is controlled by a government-run organisation called Tasmac, which has a state-wide monopoly on alcohol sales. Tasmac has seen an increase in revenue every year since 2003, when alcohol sales were...

Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholic Liver Cirrhosis Leading to Spontaneous Muscle Hematoma: An Event Fraught with Danger - FullText - Case Reports in Gastroenterology 2015, Vol. 9, No. 1 - Karger Publishers

AbstractAlcohol abuse is associated with both potentiating and antagonizing hemostatic states. Liver cirrhosis is an independent causal factor for many bleeding complications. The long-term effects of alcohol abuse coupled with advanced liver cirrhosis are additive in favor of bleeding. We report the case of a patient with a history of alcohol abuse who presented with liver cirrhosis and nontraumatic muscle hematoma diagnosed as a spontaneous hematoma of the gastrocnemius muscle. He was managed conservatively with infusions of fresh frozen plasma and platelets, which resulted in resolution of the hematoma. The pathogenesis of ‘spontaneous' muscle hematoma remains anecdotal, but since it is...
