SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION OF ALCOHOL AND ITS ABUSE It is well known that first drink leads to second and third and so on until one

SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION OF ALCOHOL AND ITS ABUSEIt is well known that first drink leads to second and third and so on until one becomes alcoholic. This could lead to death also. I will explain scientifically how bad is the use of alcohol.Read it carefully and then decide how good or bad it is for you. When a person drinks alcohol, 20 percent of it passes through the stomach wall directly into the bloodstream. The rest passes to the small intestines where it also moves to the blood stream. When the alcohol reaches the brain it causes intoxication that impairs ability to think clearly. The blood with the alcohol then circulates to the liver, which breaks down the alcohol and removes it from the...

Miller (Ed.), Alcoholism: Theory, research, and treatment, Lexington, MA: Gunn, 1985.The Cultural Context of Psychological Approaches to AlcoholismCan We Control the Effects of Alcohol?AbstractThe unique history of alcohol use in the United States has led to the ascendance of the disease theory as the dominant conception of alcoholism. Social-scientific research has consistently conflicted with the disease theory, but psychological and other nondisease conceptions of alcoholism are not well represented in the public consciousness, in treatment programs, or in policies for affecting nationwide drinking practices. Conflict in the...

Ability to consume alcohol may have shaped primate evolution, Science, AAAS

The human desire to drink far outdates the oldest brewery.Craving a stiff drink after the holiday weekend? Your desire to consume alcohol, as well as your body’s ability to break down the ethanol that makes you tipsy, dates back about 10 million years, researchers have discovered. The new finding not only helps shed light on the behavior of our primate ancestors, but also might explain why alcoholism—or even the craving for a single drink—exists in the first place.“The fact that they could put together all this evolutionary history was really fascinating,” says Brenda Benefit, an anthropologist at New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, who was not involved in the study.Scientists knew...

Drunken Monkeys: Does Alcoholism Have an Evolutionary Basis?

Drunken Monkeys: Does Alcoholism Have an Evolutionary Basis? As the child of an alcoholic father, Robert Dudley long wondered what caused the destructive allure of alcohol. Then while working in the Panamanian forest as a biologist, Dudley saw monkeys eating ripe fruit, which likely contained small amounts of the stuff, and an answer occurred to him: Maybe alcoholism is an evolutionary hangover.Had fruit-eating animals, including human ancestors, gained an evolutionary advantage by learning to associate the smell and taste of alcohol with ripe fruit? Dudley wondered. He named this concept the drunken monkey hypothesis. "I thought it was too simple an idea not to have been thought of...

The problem

Have you ever wondered why it is that you cannot stop drinking? If you are like me you probably came up with some theories of you own. I thought my main problem was lack of will power. Actually I had plenty of will power, for most of my drinking career I held down a full-time job despite feeling ill most days - this took incredible will power.I also thought that I was weak, stupid or bad, depending on my mood. When I came to AA I was told that I suffered from an illness. At first I didn't buy this, I thought these people were just trying to justify their drinking. Then I was introduced to the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous where I discovered A Doctor's Opinion of alcoholism. The Doctor's...
