Research Team Receives NIH Grant for Study of Epigenetic Processes in Alcoholism The National Institutes of Health has awarded the research team of Claes Wahlestedt, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Dean and Director of the Center for Therapeutic Innovation at the Miller School of Medicine, a $1.725 million, five-year grant to study epigenetic mechanisms that underlie alcoholism. The research could lead to new treatments for this prevalent and debilitating disorder. Excessive alcohol consumption costs the United States more than $200 billion a year. Are Alcoholism and Addiction in Our Blood?, HuffPost

Much attention is being paid these days to the role that genetics plays in health and illness. The Human Genome Project, completed in 2003, succeeded in identifying all of the genes in human DNA. That achievement, combined with ongoing research into the relationship between genes, illness, and disease, has given rise to a whole new field of medicine: "genomic medicine." The University of Connecticut Health Center, for example, where I work, recently announced that it is establishing a major research and clinical facility in conjunction with the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine. The hope is that research will help us identify the genetic causes of disease, which may in turn lead to...

Ayahuasca: a Possible Cure for Alcoholism and Depression - Motherboard

Brazil is at the forefront of research into ayahuasca as a therapeutic drug. Jorge* is around 60 years old, works a white collar job, has gray hair, married children, and grown grandchildren. People who work with him would never imagine that he participates in religious rituals using a mind altering tea. And yet, thanks to ayahuasca, Jorge became a teetotaler. A big change for someone who, when he was younger, would buy several cases of whiskey at once. "I opened the boxes and started emptying the bottles in the kitchen sink. My wife was shocked," he told me. He's not the only alcoholic to renounce booze after an experience with the mystical drink. In 2010, after a decade of failed...

Alcohol is Addictive But is it Also Contagious?

Alcohol is Addictive… But is it Also Contagious? A quick choice to consume alcohol doesn’t just affect you – it may also affect those around you, particularly in social situations. New research suggests that, whether or not they are aware of it, people in groups are influenced by each other’s alcohol consumption patterns. These findings, published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, provide further evidence that individuals prone to alcohol abuse must be careful about who they socialize with. The study analyzed 46 “drinking partners” with already established relationships, ranging in age from 19 to 60-years-old. One person in every pair was given secret instruction to...

Brain Scans Can Predict Which Alcoholics Are Most Likely to Relapse,

Getty Images/Flickr RF / Getty Images/Flickr RFFor any addiction, external cues and stress can trigger cravings that are hard to resist, and the latest research points to an area of the brain that might be responsible for sabotaging recovery. The study, which was published in JAMA Psychiatry, found that those with elevated activity in a region called the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) even while they were at rest were eight times more likely to drink again within 90 days than those whose vmPFC was calmer when they were feeling relaxed. The findings are...

Brain Images Reveal First Physical Evidence that Prayers Reduce Cravings in Alcoholics Anonymous Members, NYU Langone Medical Center

Brain Images Reveal First Physical Evidence that Prayers Reduce Cravings in Alcoholics Anonymous MembersLongtime members of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) often report little or no craving for alcohol, but why this happens remains poorly understood. Now, in what is believed to be the first study to explore brain physiology in AA members, researchers from NYU Langone Medical Center found that members who recited AA prayers after viewing drinking-related images reported less craving for alcohol after praying than after just reading a newspaper. The reduced cravings in those that prayed corresponded to increased activity in brain regions responsible for attention and emotion as measured by MRI,...
