Alcoholism is a serious problem for law firms - Business Insider

Alcoholism is a serious problem for law firms Shutterstock/Roman Samborskyi When Caplin & Drysdale founder Mortimer Caplin turned 100 last summer, he  recalled  his early years as a lawyer, and how his colleagues enjoyed liquor in the office each evening. He liked the tradition, so he kept bourbon and soda behind a globe on a shelf in his own Washington, D.C., office. “I wanted it to be a special place,” he said. Caplin’s office happy hours ended years ago, like end-of-day cocktails in most professional offices. But a culture of work-related drinking persists in many places in Big Law—and that can cause problems in a profession that is especially prone to alcoholism. The legal industry...

Women Booze: Is Everything We Know About Alcoholism Wrong? - mindbodygreen

Jenny didn’t think of herself as an alcoholic, but she knew she was falling into some bad habits. She was drinking alone, and sometimes found it hard to concentrate at work after a night of booze. She brought it up with her therapist, but says he dismissed her, saying he was more concerned about the extra calories and weight gain. Over the years, her consumption ebbed and flowed. During a decadelong marriage to a nondrinker, she cut down; when they divorced, she again found herself drinking heavily alone. Throughout this time, she remained functional — she always made it to work, for example — and didn’t identify as the kind of chronic “rock-bottom” drinker she associated with Alcoholics...

Alcoholism not uncommon among surgeons, Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - About 15 percent of surgeons have alcohol abuse or dependency problems, a rate that is somewhat higher than the rest of the population, according to a new survey. The researchers also found that surgeons who showed signs of alcoholism were 45 percent more likely to admit that they had a major medical error in the past three months. “Surgery is a stressful business. There are people who turn to alcohol to help deal with their stress,” said Dr. Edward Livingston, a professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, who was not involved in the study. “Does that affect their performance? Who knows?” he said. The researchers, led...

The National Ticking Bomb: Teenage Alcoholism., Feature Article 2009-11-20

Feature Article of Friday, 20 November 2009 The National Ticking Bomb: Teenage Alcoholism. “Alcohol, alcohol, everywhere. Let’s go have a drink”. Do you know what kind of liquor or alcohol your teenager drinks? What is the legal alcohol drinking age in Ghana anyway? If you don’t know then I have some news for you. Yes, our teenagers are drinking any thing that they can get their hands on, but who is watching? We have turned a blind eye to our teens’ problems because we don’t want to deal with it. And, our policy makers have given up on these young people, as if they are not part of the ‘national resources’. It’s like our trouble-maker uncle who always embarrasses the family during social...

Alcoholism Through a Doctor s Eyes - The New York Times

When I teach medical students about alcoholism, it is never easy. Students arrive with preconceived notions and stereotypes obtained from books, television and films — and their personal upbringings — about the subject. So I am especially glad that medical, nursing and other graduate students from my institution, New York University, have been attending the play “ Bill W. and Dr. Bob ” as part of their studies. The drama, about the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous, is a great way to learn how designating something as a disease is only a starting point for understanding the patients who experience it. Yet as I watched the play recently at New York’s Soho Playhouse, I was struck by how little...
