PLOS ONE: Relationships between Reward Sensitivity, Risk-Taking and Family History of Alcoholism during an Interactive Competitive fMRI Task

AbstractBackground Individuals with a positive family history for alcoholism (FHP) have shown differences from family-history-negative (FHN) individuals in the neural correlates of reward processing. FHP, compared to FHN individuals, demonstrate relatively diminished ventral striatal activation during anticipation of monetary rewards, and the degree of ventral striatal activation shows an inverse correlation with specific impulsivity measures in alcohol-dependent individuals. Rewards in socially interactive contexts relate importantly to addictive propensities, yet have not been examined with respect to how their neural underpinnings relate to impulsivity-related measures. Here we describe...

Effects of Cigarette Smoking and Family History of Alcoholism on Sweet Taste Perception and Food Cravings in Women

More than 250 million women worldwide smoke tobacco, one of the most heavily addictive drugs ( Mackay and Eriksen, 2002 ). Not only do women suffer greater relative risks of smoking-related diseases (see Perkins, 2001 for review), but they smoke for different reasons and have more difficulty quitting than men ( Scharf and Shiffman, 2004 ). Among the many sex differences related to smoking (see Perkins, 2001 for review), women derive more pleasure from the smell and taste of cigarettes ( Perkins et al., 2001, 2002 ), have a stronger motivation to use nicotine to avoid or reduce negative affect ( Hogle and Curtin, 2006 ), and are more likely to smoke to control their body weight ( Levine et...

Risk Factors for Alcoholism

Risk Factors for AlcoholismAlcoholism is not a disease that is created overnight. Continuous, repeated drinking can cause women to develop a tolerance towards alcohol, which means that they must drink more and more to achieve the same effects. Once this happens, alcoholism is the next step. In fact, more than 14 drinks per week for seven to eight weeks can greatly increase the possibility of developing a dependence on alcohol, yet anyone who drinks is potentially at risk. There are other factors that put you at an increased risk for developing a dependence on alcohol, as well. These include having family members who are alcoholics, a familial history of substance abuse, a familial history of...

Alcoholism in South Africa

ALCOHOLISMExcessive amounts of alcohol can have adverse effects on physical, mental and social health.Alcohol in the blood is metabolised to form a metabolite called acetaldehydeAcetaldehyde is a potent oxidant that leads to the production of free radicals (unstable particles) that cause tissue damage and interfere with bio-chemical processes - this accounts for many of the damaging effects of alcohol in the body.THE HISTORYThe issue of alcohol abuse in South Africa can be traced back to the early years of Dutch settlement.Dutch farmers coming to the Cape implemented the 'dop' system (mostly in the Western Cape) in which 'African workers' were paid in alcohol in addition to their wages....

Alcoholism: What you might not know -

(CNN) -- Concerns about alcohol abuse have been making headlines this week.First, the Indian state of Rajasthan reportedly announced it would shut down 800 alcohol shops. Then, in Britain, chief medical officer Liam Donaldson recommended Thursday that anyone 15 years old and younger avoid alcohol completely. It's no wonder people are worried.A recent survey of alcoholism studies in the Lancet suggests that men have more than a 20 percent lifetime risk of developing alcohol-use disorders, while women's risk is 8 to 10 percent.Much of that risk is inherited. Studies show that as much as 60 percent of the risk of alcohol-use disorders is genetic, said Dr. Marc Schuckit, professor of psychiatry...

ILR Oral History Project documents unsung heroes of the struggle against alcoholism in the workplace, Cornell Chronicle

Feb. 29, 2008When Samuel Bacharach was appointed director of the R. Brinkley Smithers Institute for Alcohol-Related Workplace Studies in the late 1980s, he was, he concedes, a bit out of his depth at the time. Not that Bacharach, Cornell's McKelvey-Grant Professor of Labor Management in the ILR School, lacked a command of the facts about alcoholism and the workplace. That wasn't the issue. But to get to the guts of his research, he needed people who had been in the trenches. People who could make the numbers real. People, as fate would have it, like Mickey Diamond, Donnie Perks, Stacia Murphy and Jim Cusack, each a recovering alcoholic and all pioneers in the field of alcohol abuse prevention...
