Why don't we talk about this more when it is such a huge problem with LGBT's? I know first hand of what dangers drug and alcohol abuse can do...

8 Things You Definitely Should Know About Alcoholism Everyday Drinking : theBERRY

Growing up, I thought alcoholics were people who drank constantly, beer cans or wine glasses or brown bags in hand, lost their jobs, and dramatically ruined every relationship in their life. That road is definitely possible, but I learned it’s not the only road for addictive drinking, not by far. Modern culture has presented a more nuanced version of what addiction can look like, but often alcoholism is still depicted fairly predictably, a la the falling down drunken dad in Shameless, or Lucille in Arrested Development. In life, how this disease presents itself isn’t always so loud, graphic or obvious. There are other details about alcoholism that don’t get much play time...

68 weeks sober: Comedian James Nokise opens up about alcoholism,

James Nokise can point to the moment, some 68 weeks ago, when his life changed. On March 7, 2016, the Wellington comedian was officially diagnosed an alcoholic. Every seven days since then, Nokise notches up another week of being sober. He describes 2016 as the most hellish time of his life: going cold turkey to give up the drug that had been in his system for 15 years. Fifteen years is also the length of time that the 34-year-old has been making people laugh through his stand-up performances which have touched on everything from sport and politics, to gangs and stereotypes within Pacific Island culture.  Throughout his career, alcohol has accompanied him on stage like a friend. Ten Radical Things NIAAA Research Shows About Alcoholism

In the newsletter of the addiction division of the American Psychological Association, Stanton turns Project MATCH and other NIAAA and mainstream research on their ears to show that alcoholism cannot be dealt with as a medical disease. Instead, such research shows, even highly dependent drinking is an interchange between drinker and environment, shifts considerably over time, allows for moderated drinking, does not particularly respond to treatment (and almost not at all to standard, overly-aggressive 12-step therapy that dominates the American treatment scene), and responds best to brief helping interactions in which the drinker is the principal actor.A decade after Stanton wrote this...

Science busts age-old myth about alcoholism, Pavlok

It is an established belief that those who have suffered from alcoholism can never go back to drinking socially in moderation.Someone who has broken free of alcoholism knows it takes tremendous effort, will-power and support to do so, and that one drink is all it takes to go spiralling back into the habit.A study (Lovibond, Caddy, 1970) from the University of New South Wales set out to dispel this belief, and succeeded beyond expectations.Electric jolts give alcoholics an “inbuilt stop mechanism” allowing them to drink socially in moderation without giving up alcohol completelyIn 1970, two researchers designed a program aimed at training alcoholics to drink socially and in moderation.The...
