Dick Van Dyke opens up about alcoholism: It took me a long time to get over it -

Famous for his enthusiasm and dynamism as a performer, Dick Van Dyke told Oprah Winfrey that his shyness among strangers led to an extended bout of alcoholism, according to "Entertainment Tonight." "I was very shy — with strangers — I couldn't talk to people," the 90-year-old actor told Winfrey, according to the "ET" exclusive. "And I found if I had a drink, it would loosen me up. The barriers went down and I became very social. That's what got me started." After that, "ET" reported, alcoholism took hold on the "Mary Poppins" star. "It took me a long time to get over it," Van Dyke reportedly told Winfrey for the season premiere of OWN's "Where Are They Now?" He's since turned that...

Opinion: Do immigrants dare speak up about alcoholism?, Yle Uutiset,

Wali Hashi is a freelance journalist and a contributor to Yle's "Perspectives" online column. I occasionally work as a security guard in downtown Turku. During the course of my work I constantly encounter alcoholics – or my “customers”, as I like to call them. One of them is Pekka. Pekka is a harmless alcoholic, whom I always have to remove from the premises of certain businesses. One evening we got to chatting. Pekka enjoyed his bottle of vodka and said, “I was a doctor and I had a wife and children, a happy family. I lost everything, and this was the reason.” I asked him, “Why don’t you just stop?” “That’s easy for you to say,” he returned. “Where do you get the money for...

about alcoholism, The Alcoholics Guide to Alcoholism

In the final months of my active alcoholism I was living in the attic room of my house. I drank about 6 bottles of cheap Spanish wine plus a dozen cans of strong German beer every day. The alcohol had little effect on me by this stage. I only drank to dampen the delirium tremens, the violent shakes. I often could not control my hand enough to get alcohol into my mouth, holding my wrist steady with my other hand to raise the drink to my mouth. Usually  cracking the bottle or tin can against my teeth. I was no longer getting drunk anymore. You know you are fully addicted to alcohol when it does nothing intoxicating any more. I slept in 5-10 minute fits and busts. I did not eat for months. The...

The Stigma of Alcoholism

“What are you, like…an alcoholic or something?” Here’s a scenario to consider: A girl walks into a bar with friends and orders a soda in the midst of flowing IPAs and lagers. Not much is made of it – other than a possible sneer by the bartender – but that could simply be her imagination. When it comes time for the next round, however, the girl orders water – spiked with three lemons. That move prompts the question, “What are you, like an alcoholic or something?” The girl’s friend quickly interjects, “No, she’s not an alcoholic, she just gave up alcohol for Lent!” This is my story and brief stint into sobriety. I noticed over the past forty days, that not only had I...

Alcoholism Quotes II

ALCOHOLISM QUOTES II quotations about alcoholism That's the problem with drinking, I thought, as I poured myself a drink. If something bad happens you drink in an attempt to forget; if something good happens you drink in order to celebrate; and if nothing happens you drink to make something happen. To dispute with a drunkard is to debate with an empty house. PUBLILIUS SYRUS, The Moral Sayings of Publilius Syrus To understand why alcoholism is a disease, it is important to know about the neurological effects of alcohol on the brain. Drugs for alcoholism go largely unused - Chicago Tribune

Excessive alcohol use is one of the most pressing public health issues in the United States. Some 88,000 Americans died of alcohol-related causes every year between 2006 and 2010, according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That's far higher than the latest numbers of annual deaths from drug overdoses (64,000), breast cancer (42,000) or prostate cancer (28,000). Surveys suggest that more than 15 million American adults suffer from alcohol dependence or abuse within a given year.
