Alcoholism DiseaseWe receive many inquiries into alcoholism disease, alcohol dependence and alcohol abuse. Photo Credit ampak/iStock/Getty Images Overview People who are addicted to alcohol may become severely deficient in important basic vitamins and minerals, directly affecting their health. Individuals who consume more than 30 percent of their calories as alcohol have the greatest risk, particularly for deficiencies in thiamine and vitamin A. Supplements can often help, but the best choice is treatment for alcoholism. Thiamine Some alcoholics develop a thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency, which can lead to an alcoholic brain disease known as Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS). A thiamine deficiency caused by malnutrition is rare in developed countries, but does occur...

Alcoholism and Liver Disease, University of Southampton

Alcoholism and Liver DiseaseDoctors at the University of Southampton have found that most patients with severe alcohol-induced liver disease do not have a dependence on alcohol, as generally previously believed. These findings are at odds with current strategies to combat the increase in alcohol related deaths which are targeted at those with alcohol dependency. In a study of thirty four patients with severe ALD (Alcohol-Induced Liver Disease), the team found that only 9 per cent showed evidence of severe alcohol dependence. They were more likely to be employed, married or in a stable relationship, and to drink with family, friends or work colleagues - a pattern which often escalated into...

Alcoholism - A Family Disease, Next Chapter Family Program

Alcoholism is often referred to as a ‘family disease’, and not merely because the disorder is hereditary. How Denial Keeps People Stuck in the Disease of Alcoholism - Spiritual River Addiction Help

One of the reasons that early recovery is so tough is because we tend to try to do it on our own and refuse to ask for help. Of course part of this is due to our denial and there are actually several stages of denial that keep people stuck in recovery. One of those stages of denial is simply about the fact that we think we can do it all ourselves, if only we really wanted to quit drinking or using drugs. Eventually we break through that level of denial and realize that we are going to need to ask for help if we are going to change our lives. But our denial keeps us stuck in other ways, too.Let...

People who say "Alcoholism isn't a disease"

My mother is an alcoholic. She has tried to remain sober for most of my life but she always slips back. She doesn't drink because she thinks it's fun. Often times she just sits by herself, silently getting drunk. When she comes off of a 2-3 day bender she goes into a depressed and anxious state made worse by the chronic insomnia caused by the alcoholism. Actually, the only time my mother gets into a deep sleep is when she's been drinking. If anyone were to ask her she would say that alcohol has had a terrible effect on her life but yet she cannot resist it. Some dark part of her mind needs it and won't let go.When I was a teenager I used to be very angry with her. I'd curse and scream at her...
