Alcoholism Research Surprisingly Has Come a Long Way, UT News, The University of Texas at Austin

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently came out with a study that found six Americans die every day on average from alcohol poisoning. Perhaps more surprising is that it turns out that most deaths from drinking too much involve middle-aged adults, not teens or college students. The study doesn't point at causation, but the CDC did raise new questions for further research. Although more research is always a good thing, it's unwise to think that we don't already know a lot about drinking and alcoholism. For example, "drinking too much" is not always "alcoholism." Breakthroughs in genetics, neurobiology and neuropharmacology have led scientists to know that some people...

Why Alcoholism is a Disease, Recovery Boot Camp, Alcohol Recovery

You often hear alcoholism characterized as a chronic disease, but why? There is nothing organic that inspires a person to pick up that first drink; that is a decision. It's what happens to the body after that drink that is the basis for the disease theory. To understand why alcoholism is a disease and more than just a choice for someone you love, you must understand the fundamentals of alcoholism. The Disease Theory Alcoholism is sometimes called a disease of the brain, because chronic drinking alters brain structure and function. Alcohol addiction is a progressive and lifelong illness just like diabetes or high blood pressure. The progression of it includes difficulty controlling drinking...

Alcoholism is a progressive, unstoppable disease that wants nothing more than to kill you., San Diego Reader

It is certainly tiresome to me to keep writing of the same thing. Some have said they enjoy the hell out of my descriptions of affliction. I refer, of course, to alcoholism. But it is a subject I am sick to death of. One acquaintance said to me during a recent and fairly lengthy period of sobriety, "Why don't you get into heroin or something, liven things up? Your recent stuff leaves the rest of us nothing to relate to." He may have meant "feel superior to," but I don't know that for a fact; and I am constantly surprised at how many people are relatively sympathetic. Equally, I am astonished, in 2007, how many people have Victorian ideas about the thing. Talk of willpower and moral failure...

Stages of Alcoholism: The Progressive Nature of Alcoholism

Alcoholism follows a fairly predictable course - it gets worse over time. Do you have an alcohol addiction? If you do, addiction researchers say that unless you stop drinking, they can predict your they don't need a crystal ball to do it. After observing enough alcoholics experience the same problems and situations in the same basic order, researchers can now predict with some confidence that alcoholics drinking today will likely also progress through very similar types of experiences in a similar order. That is unless you quit, then the future's yours for the taking, once again. As a cautionary guide, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) developed a behaviors of...

Is alcoholism really a disease? - NY Daily News

BILL: ”You know what's wrong with men in America?” a just-divorced woman I will call Louise recently said to me. “All this talk about alcoholism or drug addiction being a ‘disease’ - which is just politically correct blue sky crap put out by people like you and my ratty ex-husband. Why can’t they Just Say No?”DR. DAVE: What did you tell her?BILL: Well, Dave, she caught me in a kind of moral bind. I have nothing against calling alcoholism or drug use a disease. Shame and guilt never got anyone sober. But I prefer the term "addiction" - maybe it’s deadly, but you did it to yourself. You didn’t catch it by kissing the bartender. So let me turn the question around. Why do you call it a disease?...

Understanding that Alcoholism is a Disease, Not a Choice

Understanding that Alcoholism is a Disease, Not a ChoiceAlcoholism is very different from other drinking problems or alcohol abuse. It's a disease which completely takes over a person's life. It's not something the alcoholic chooses, and stopping is not a case of saying no. It's compulsive and progressive disease, and until the alcoholic admits the problem and quits drinking, it's unstoppable. The condition affects their physical and mental health, and causes problems at home, at work and with friends. The term alcoholic is often used inaccurately, but the difference between someone who enjoys a few drinks and even sometimes a few too many, and the alcoholic, is clearly defined. It is not...

Alcoholism is Not a Disease, Disease Concept of Alcoholism-the Myth

Disease Concept of Alcoholism - the MythWe are not alone in our assertion that alcoholism and drug addictions are not diseases. Please take a few minutes to understand what research is now telling us about alcohol rehab, alcohol abuse, alcoholism rehab, abusive drinking, and drug use.First it is important to understand that the disease theory is just that - a theory. Additionally, it is important to understand that this theory is only accepted as fact by the rehab, rehabilitation, and treatment industry here in the United States. The rest of the world considers the disease theory for alcoholism pure bunk. In his book Why We Should Reject The Disease Concept of Alcoholism, Herbert Fingarette...
