Lawmakers Push Alcohol Tax Cut Despite Rising Drinking Rates

Deaths linked to  alcohol  are significantly more common than drug overdose deaths, but lawmakers may promote more drinking through a two-year tax break for producers of beer, wine and spirits as part of the Senate’s tax code overhaul. The tax break, for 2018 and 2019, would save  alcohol   producers $4.2 billion,  according  to the Joint Committee on Taxation. The provisions in the Senate Finance Committee’s tax plan were requested by Republican Sen.  Rob Portman  of Ohio, but are based on a bill from Sen.  Ron Wyden  of Oregon, the committee’s top Democrat. Alcohol abuse: The drunkest city in every state

Alcohol abuse: The drunkest city in every state Excessive drinking claims the lives of tens of thousands of Americans each year and is responsible for about 1 in every 10 deaths among working-age adults. Alcohol abuse also takes a heavy economic toll. A recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that excessive alcohol consumption cost the U.S. economy an estimated $250 billion in 2010 — primarily in lost productivity, medical bills, and motor vehicle accidents. Excessive alcohol consumption, according to the CDC, includes binge drinking — defined as four or more drinks in a single occasion for women and five or more for men — and heavy drinking, which is defined...

OMIM Entry # 103780 - ALCOHOL DEPENDENCE

The tendency for drinking patterns of children to resemble those of their parents has been recognized since antiquity, e.g., in the observations of Plato and Aristotle ( Warner and Rosett, 1975 ). Alcoholism is probably a multifactorial, genetically influenced disorder ( Goodwin, 1976 ). The genetic influence is indicated by studies showing that (1) there is a 25 to 50% lifetime risk for alcoholism in sons and brothers of severely alcoholic men; (2) alcohol preference can be selectively bred for in experimental animals; (3) there is a 55% or higher concordance rate in monozygotic twins with only a 28% rate for like-sex dizygotic twins; and (4) half brothers with different fathers and...

The Highs and Lows of Germany′s Drinking Culture, Germany, DW, 18.11.2006

Germany The Highs and Lows of Germany's Drinking Culture In Germany, beer is about the same price as water, and drinking alcohol in public is common as well as legal. But has the ease with which people can consume cheap alcohol created a harmful drinking culture? Germany is one of the heaviest alcohol-drinking nations in Europe, placed fifth after Luxembourg, Hungary, Czech Republic and Ireland. Only around five percent of Germans consider themselves teetotalers, making it -- after Luxembourg -- the European country with the lowest percentage of people who abstain from drinking. According to the World Health Organization the European region has the highest alcohol intake of all other...

Americans Are Drinking More — A Lot More - NBC News

Heavy drinking is on the rise in many parts of the U.S. — up more than 17 percent since 2005, researchers reported Thursday. And rates are rising faster among women than among men. But there’s a big difference county by county, the statistics show. In some counties, more than a third of the residents are binge drinkers and more than 20 percent are heavy drinkers. The hardest-drinking U.S. county? Menominee County, Wisconsin. Heavy drinkers are setting themselves up for liver disease and many forms of cancer, while binge drinkers can see not only health effects but damage to their jobs, marriages and friendships — not to mention the risk of vehicle accidents. “In 2012, 8.2 percent of all...
