Dallas judge who resigned after colleagues said he was unfit, died from alcoholism, artery disease, Courts, Dallas News

David Lewis was found dead in his home in June. His death was natural, the medical examiner's office said. His fellow justices said last year that his work in the 5th Court of Appeals had suffered and he had anger issues while battling alcoholism and depression. He resigned in October 2016, before the State Commission on Judicial Conduct could ask the Texas Supreme Court to remove him. In June, University Park police went to his home in the 6000 block of Auburndale Avenue for a welfare check. He was found dead inside about 7:10 p.m. There were no obvious signs of trauma to his body, a police spokeswoman said. Lewis, a Republican, would have turned 66 next month. He attended the University...

Mark's Story

From MDA NewsLetter, Vol. 6, No. 5 - Sept/Oct 1995 Recovering from Manic-Depression and Alcoholism Thirteen years ago, at the age of 24, I was diagnosed with manic-depression. Learning to live with this mental illness has been extremely difficult especially during the last 6 years. In 1989 I had my second manic episode and I was treated at the Clarke Institute in Toronto. Since then and up to August 1994 I have been in hospitals in many different cities: Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, White Rock, Vancouver (UBC and St. Paul's). After suffering an episode and a lengthy stay of up to two months in hospital, I would attempt to recover but within 3-6 months I wound up in hospital once again. I...

Does Alcoholism cause Depression?, Next Chapter

Plainly and simply, alcohol is a depressant. This means that if you drink an excessive amount on a regular basis, you become exceedingly more likely to get the blues. Drinking to excess for a prolonged period of time can lead to serious and sometimes irreversible brain damage – and has been known to cause depression. Additionally, drinking too much leads to an increased risk of engaging in self-destructive behaviors, such as sabotaging interpersonal relationships, destroying work-related opportunities, and unwittingly draining the old bank account. The more consequences one experiences a direct result of his or her drinking, the more down in the dumps he or she is liable to feel. And if one...

Help With Alcohol Addiction, Find Treatment For Alcoholism

How to Help an Alcoholic What Is Alcohol Addiction? Alcohol is one of the oldest and most commonly abused psychoactive substances in the world (NAADAC, 2005). It has long been recognized that a key component of what we have come to know as alcohol addiction or alcoholism is the inability to control how much a person drinks (Hernandez-Avila and Kranzler, 2011). For some, addiction to alcohol may develop, in part, as compulsive drinking behavior starts in those looking to experience the rewarding, intensely pleasurable effects--and in those who resistant to letting those effects wear off. In other words, people begin to repeatedly turn to alcohol use, since their mood may be temporarily...

Alcoholism-Depression Gene ID'd - CBS News

Scientists say they've identified a gene that appears to be linked to both alcoholism and depression, a finding that may one day help identify those at higher risk for the diseases and guide new treatments. Previous studies of twins and adopted siblings have suggested there likely are genes in common underlying alcoholism and depression, and that the two disorders seem to run in families. But the lead researcher of the new study says this is the first report of a specific gene that seems to increase risk for both disorders. "Clinicians have observed a connection between these two disorders for years, so we are excited to have found what could be a molecular underpinning for that association...

Drinking to up mood tied to alcoholism, depression, Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who drink to cope with the blues are more prone to becoming depressed and at greater risk of alcohol dependence, a new study shows. The study team sought to determine whether drinking to manage mood might be related to both alcoholism and depression by looking at 5,181 twins aged 30 and older. Twin studies allow scientists to tease out the effects of environment and genes on certain traits. Kelly C. Young-Wolff of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and her colleagues found that drinking to manage mood was strongly inherited and accounted for basically all of the genetic and environmental influences shared by depression and alcohol...
