Early Teenage Drinking Linked to Alcoholism

A new study finds that early alcohol use may contribute to long-term health consequences. Analysis of a survey over 40,000 U.S. adults suggests early drinking not only increases the risk of developing future alcohol dependency, but increases the chance of developing addiction at a younger age and of developing chronic, relapsing dependence. Among all respondents who developed alcoholism at some point, almost half (47 percent) met the diagnostic criteria for alcohol dependence (alcoholism) by age 21. The associations between early drinking and later problems held even after investigators controlled for other risk factors for dependence, adding to concerns that drinking at a young age might...

Pediatricians should ask teens about drug, alcohol use at every visit - Harvard Health Blog - Harvard Health Publishing

At almost every doctor visit, adolescents have their blood pressure checked. But few are asked about their use of alcohol and drugs, which contribute to the leading causes of injury and death in this age group. To make it easier for doctors and nurses talk with teens about alcohol and drugs, the American Academy of Pediatrics has just published a set of questions to guide the conversation, along with advice on what to do with the answers. “Talking with adolescents about drugs and alcohol should be a brief, easy part of every health care visit,” Dr. Sharon J.L. Levy, director of the Adolescent Substance Abuse Program at Children’s Hospital Boston and a lead author of the...

ADHD Teens at Risk for Alcohol Abuse: Substance News

Alcohol dependence may be significantly more common among children of alcoholics who were diagnosed with ADHD or conduct disorder when they were younger, some of whom begin drinking at age 12 and are already alcoholics by age 14. These findings from researchers at the University of Iowa appear in the December 2001 issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry. Samuel Kuperman, M.D, lead author of the study, told ADDitude that he was surprised at the early onset of drinking among the teens who participated in his study. Research of non-ADD children has shown that many people begin drinking around age 14. “These kids started drinking at a very early age,” said Kuperman, adding that...

Teen Drinking Linked to Adult Alcoholism

Teen Drinking Linked to Adult Alcoholism New evidence from a team of American researchers indicates that teenagers who periodically engage in binge drinking may experience changes in the expression of their genetic code that increase the likelihood of serious alcohol problems in adulthood. Researchers and public health officials are well aware that genetic risk factors for alcohol problems commonly interact with environmental factors encountered in everyday life. In a study published in March 2015 in the journal Neurobiology of Disease, researchers from two U.S. institutions gauged the potential of binge drinking in adolescence to produce alterations in genetic expression, called epigenetic...

Does Parental Alcoholism Lead To Teen Dating Violence?, The Fix

Does Parental Alcoholism Lead To Teen Dating Violence? Will My Insurance Pay for Rehab? A new study suggests that growing up with a father who abuses alcohol makes teenagers more likely to abuse their romantic partners. The study, published in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, found that unrest and inattention in the home because of a parent’s addiction can affect kids when they are young and lead to more violent behavior during their teen years. "It appears that family dynamics occurring in the preschool years and in middle childhood are critical in the development of aggression and dating violence in the teenage years," said Jennifer Livingston, lead author of the study and...

Teenage-alcoholism, Tumblr

Hi! I’d reccomend doing LOTS of research and contacting people with first hand accounts or someone who has witnessed someone close to them going through it. This is another one of those times where I can’t be a ton of help because I have literally 0 experience with alcoholism at all. I think @scriptshrink could help you. Really reccomend you check ‘em out. I’m gonna try to offer some insight, but know that this comes from an unknowledgeabe person who’s saying what feels right. • It’d probably start of slow and gradually elevate. Maybe they have one drink at a party on a weekend. Then they drink a couple more at the next party. Then they have a drink...

Alcoholic parents could be the cause of violent teenagers - Business Insider

Teenagers who abuse their romantic partners could have alcoholic parents to blame — here's why Teenagers with alcoholic fathers might be more likely to abuse their own partners. A study has shown this could be because their mothers become depressed, and therefore aren't as warm and sensitive towards them. These signs of aggression can be seen, and dealt with, while children are still toddlers. Children are more in tune to their parents' drinking habits than we might think. Research has shown they might notice changes in mum or dad's behaviour, even if they've only had one glass of wine. According to a new study, having parents who have an alcohol use disorder can even increase the risk that...
