It is easy to think that alcoholism only affects the drinker. They are the ones who get drunk, right? However, that is a rationalization often used by the alcoholic himself. He cannot see the damage he is causing in the lives of those around him, nor does he care to. That would interfere with his drinking. However, alcoholism does impact the whole family and its reach can even expand far beyond that. This post will show several ways in which alcoholism impacts the family, including these topics: Effects of alcoholism.

The alcoholic is often an erratic creature. While drinking, he might start off jovial and full of fun. When the drinks become too much, however, he might become morose, saddened by some long-ago memory. Others become angry and violent or wild and full of manic energy that is at once attractive and dangerous. When the family approaches him, they don’t know what to expect and are constantly on edge around him. Everyone in the household becomes concerned that they keep him happy and docile lest the horrid Mr. Hyde emerge and ruin yet another day. This is sometimes called emotional hostage-taking and once the alcoholic sees the power he wields, he will begin to use it in ever more manipulative ways.

Having an alcoholic in the family causes undue stress on everyone. Even if he is able to minimize the direct emotional outbursts that characterize so many alcoholic scenarios, his children grow up without a true father, the wife has no true spouse, and everyone lives in a state of alcoholic isolation. Then, there is the stress of worrying over the alcoholic’s general health and well-being. Children may blame themselves for how their parent behaves and they then end up acting out in school, or depressed and withdrawn.

All of the stress that surrounds the alcoholic takes a toll on those around him. As a result, they may be more prone to problems with school, relationships, and may be more prone to substance abuse themselves. Further, stress is a risk factor for many diseases, including heart disease and diabetes.

Alcohol is expensive and alcoholism is doubly so. Alcoholics run up exorbitant tabs in bars, restaurants, and at the ball game. Then they might lose a job due to erratic behavior, absenteeism, or inability to perform their duties in an efficient manner. If the law becomes involved, as is very common, legal fees and time in jail are compounded by lost wages.
