It is said very often that modest drinking relives tension and keeps the mind calm. But the good effects of moderate drinking are yet to be proved. It is certain however that alcohol drinking impairs judgement, slows down nerve impulses, causes disturbance in muscular coordination and generally retards the time taken by the body to show response to situations. This will be indeed very dangerous under certain circumstances. In addition to this, alcohol addiction has the following bad effects on the various parts of the body.

1. Alcohol lowers the blood sugar level and is harmful to the brain. It might even cause irrepairable nerve damage.

2. The one organ that is mostly affected by drinking is the liver. Basically liver is capable of converting alcohol into other compounds rendering them harmless to the body. Liver cells synthesise fat from excess alcohol which is deposited in hepatic cells and bile passages. This deposition disturbs protein synthesis and conversion of glycogen. Excessive accumulation of fats disturbs the enzyme production and the condition is known is fatty liver syndrome. In advance stages fatty cells accumulate so much that it causes liver cirrhosis.

Many drunkards without realizing the danger that they bring upon themselves and also to others take to driving the vehicles after having had drinks. This is highly harmful as the individual will not be in control of himself, hence the question of his control over the vehicle does not arise. Drinking affects the alertness, retards response to a situation as there is impaired coordination between the mind and the body. Further, alcohol may also blur the vision. Hence no one who has had a drink should take to driving.

As the alcohol addiction is a social evil the treatment is more psychological than medical. Research studies have revealed that people who resort to heavily drinking are highly tensed up having family and financial problems and they take to drinking in order to escape from the realities of life. They should be convinced first that drinking is not a solution to a problem but a problem in itself. Instead of solving a problem a drunkard gets into more problems.

Psychotherapy is employed in many centres called Deaddiction centres. In these centres the patient is advised to give up drinking gradually. Because giving up drinking all of a sudden will have some effects on the body known as withdrawal symptoms as the body has been physically dependent on the alcohol. Withdrawal symptoms include lack of coordination, confused mind, fear, trembling of the body, sleeplessness, hallucinations etc.
