Alcoholism a factor in man s fire-starting history,

An alcoholic pensioner who deliberately set two fires near inner city buildings has been sentenced to home detention. History of alcoholism.

Trevor Raymond Harold Riding's offending on February 17 could have resulted in serious damage being done to buildings along the main street of New Plymouth, had the fire taken hold.

The summary of facts said about 7.30pm on February 17, the 65-year-old was in the alleyway behind a cafe on Devon St East where he set fire to a green wheelie bin, which contained rubbish.

"As a result of the defendant's actions, the contents of the rubbish bin burnt and a large hole was formed in the side of the wheelie bin," the summary of facts stated.

The fire service, which was called to the scene, later advised police that if the blaze had taken hold, it could have caused significant damage to surrounding buildings.

About 45 minutes later, Riding walked to the Stonebaths premises on New Plymouth's Ariki St and set fire to cardboard and wooden pallets located under the awning of the building.

The fire caused "a considerable amount" of damage to the building and a car which was parked nearby.

Riding previously pleaded guilty to two charges of arson.

At his sentencing in the New Plymouth District Court on Wednesday, prosecutor Georgia Milne said a report completed on Riding did not indicate he suffered from any mental illness but that he had a tendency to light fires when he was under the influence of alcohol.

The report also confirmed Riding's alcoholism, which had dogged him for many years.

Milne said despite his guilty pleas, Riding had continued to deny the offending to his probation officer.  He said he had only pleaded guilty as he believed a jury would have found him responsible for the arsons given his previous criminal history, Milne said.

Defence lawyer Nathan Bourke said Riding was now getting help for his problems and wanted the psychological intervention, Bourke said.

He said Riding had spent much of the last 35 years behind bars.

"He told me 'I don't want to die in jail'," Bourke said.

Riding had also been able to demonstrate a six month compliance with electronic bail, which showed he was a "ideal candidate" for a sentence of home detention, Bourke said.

Judge Chris Sygrove said despite his history, Riding was an example of how you can "teach an old dog new tricks".

"You have actually reformed yourself surprisingly well," the judge said.

Riding was sentenced to 10 and-a-half months' home detention.
