it a disease or illness and if so, how helpful are these labels? Alcoholism disease.

Reading an article, recently, regarding the tragic death of Charles Kennedy and his addiction to alcohol, resulted in a great deal of reflection. Of course, there is the sadness of death, especially in someone as young and gentle as Charles Kennedy. There is no doubt that alcoholism is devastating; gripping decent, loveable, buoyant people. Is alcohol addiction a disease or illness and how helpful are these labels?

During the late 1990’s the ‘talk’ from America was that addiction was a disease or illness, the sceptic may say to ensure health insurers, fund treatment. Apparently, the ‘disease’ and ‘illness’ label has always been debated within the medical profession. Studies, brain scans etc, show there is little evidence of it being passed down through genes, resulting in the old nature v nurture debate!

Those who feel it is a disease or illness have argued that though it may very well be a conscious decision, in the first instance, to start using alcohol, at some point a trigger within the brain, results in the inability to stop. I guess whatever your view, whether this is based on knowledge or hearsay, it is very sad for a person to suffer any addiction and of course, empathy and help is needed.

I do wonder though, by labelling alcoholism as a disease or illness, if it somehow takes away someone’s choice and ability, albeit a really tough one, to make a conscious decision to stop and take a different path. Perhaps it therefore negates any responsibility and maybe it is this responsibility that is needed, to stop drinking. Calling it a disease or illness feels quite disabling, which in itself, feels tragic.

As with many addictions, drinking is an attempt to numb excruciating emotional pain and distress. Seeking help and support for the pain, however scary, can be empowering and exhilarating, turning the destructive addiction into your salvation.

Whatever the answer, nature or nurture, the question is ‘How helpful is the label of ‘illness’ and ‘disease and how empowering or disempowering, is it?
